You have to go over to Seano’s blog today, Circle of Fits, and read what his friend Sadler Vader had to say about rock and roll music. Its his commentary on the state of music today inspired by watching some of the greats last night on RRHOF’s concert. I think he’s right on. (bummer that it was on HBO, what a rip for those of us with budgets that don’t allow that channel)
On a sad note…just updated the post on Ronnie James Dio, he has stomach cancer

Yes, two videos in two days from a couple of my favorite local bands. Today’s video is for Bombadil’s song “So Many Ways to Die,” and like the band’s music, it’s charming and a bit disturbing at the same time. Still no word on a live show as bass player Daniel Michalak is still dealing with severe tendonitis.

Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse, through Eagle Rock Entertainment has released a new studio album by the Steve Morse Band, ‘Out Standing In Their Field’, released in the U.S. on November 17.
Morse, who got his start in the Dixie Dregs in the 1970s, has enjoyed a fruitful career, earning himself a reputation as a “musician’s musician.” He’s spent the last sixteen years shredding for the legendary Deep Purple, in addition to fronting his own band. The release of Out Standing In Their Field is the 12th album to date for The Steve Morse Band.
On this entirely instrumental album, Morse joins forces with bassist Dave LaRue and drummer Van Romaine to pound out un-tethered creativity. A multi-faceted blend of Morse’s influences, Out Standing In Their Field is a diverse sound spectrum, twisting together elements of rock, country, jazz, funk and classical. Unencumbered by lyrics, Morse’s guitar acts as a wailing, exploring siren, channeling emotion and raw power through the language of riffs. In addition to the ten brand new tracks boasted on Out Standing In Their Field, the band threw in an extra treat: a live recording of their song “Rising Power.” This bonus track invokes the goosebump-inducing power the Steve Morse Band conjures on stage.

Ok, all the COOL (and lucky) people got to watch the RRHOF concert on HBO tonight. I am watching a public TV station doing “Ed Sullivan’s Rock and Roll”, which, is classic. I rather be watching what Starr talks about (see comments on the last post) but I will settle for Herman’s Hermits, The Animals, The Beatles, The Doors, The Stones….
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the ROLLING stones”
They won’t allow me to embed the vid, but its worth a cruise over to YouTube to check out an extrememly young Mick Jagger when Brian Jones was still in the band…

Somehow, the return of Magnapop had passed me by – they’d vanished in 1999 with a contractual obligation to not use the name for seven years hanging over their heads; they’d re-emerged in 2005 and relifted the flag with Mouthfeel – which seems to have never got a UK release.
This year, there was another new album, Chase Park, which only got a digital release. I say “only” like the prospect of new material from Magnapop is ever going to be underwhelming, which is, of course, wrong.
But this story is getting itself round the wrong way – forgetting to mention the roots in that primordial soup of guitar bands, Athens, Georgia; the spell trading as Homemade Sister and Swell; demos produced by Michael Stipe; tour supports for Sugar and Juliana Hatfield and The Lemonheads. The ceaseless touring in the 90s and the big break that broke them, opening for REM on the Monster tour. The strains weren’t helped when their record label collapsed.
But they were special – they are special, and have remained special in the intervening time.
And this is what they sound like:
