I am actually ahead of the game for once as I have finished all of the reivews I promised for the week and it’s only Tuesday. I am listening to to a number of new releases in including the new ones from Fall of Troy, Lita Ford and I have a Blaze Bayley DVD that I am looking forward to watching. Surprisingly we are almost down to the final quarter of the year. Which means I need to start working on my top 25 albums on 2009 soon. There are still some prime releases to come out as Slayer, WASP and others are coming and I still have not gotten around to hearing the new Megadeth yet. Here are some questions and my answers.
Album that is going to suck like a Hoover vacum cleaner at the end of 2009-the new KISS
Album that I am most looking forward to at the end of 2009-the new Slayer
Band who is working on an album that I am most looking forward to whenever it comes out-Armored Saint
Band who didn’t realease an album this year, but needs to next year- Iron Maiden and if we are just considering studio releases and if you count their live album this year then I ‘ll say then I would go with Acid King instead.
***Feel free to chime in with your own answers or invent your own end of year questions for others to answer.
The daily mix:
1) Curtis Mayfield: “(Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below We’re All Gonna Go”
2) The Chambers Brothers: “So Tired”
3) Bettye LaVette: “Ain’t That Lovin’ You Baby”
4) Bobby Little: “Delta Nova”
5) Brooklyn Soul Organization: “Trouble in the House”
6) Jimmy Smith: “Big Fat Mama”
7) Hugh Masekela: “Inner Crisis”
Melba Liston: “The Trolley Song”
9) Yvette Summers & Chekere: “Blue Arturo”
10) Blue Harlem: “He May Be Yours”

Being at the House of Blues in Chicago to see Pearl Jam and having Robert Plant show up to sing this? Wow. It seems too good to be true, most things are.
The video quality is shitty but hey – so is life sometimes.
On this date in 1982, The Happy Family released their debut album, The Man On Your Street. There were no singles released from the album. The Edinburgh, Scotland post punk band was founded by ex-Josef K bassist Dave Weddell. They released one EP and on album before disbanding in 1983. A second album of previously unreleased tracks was released in 1984.

I became a Walter “Wolfman” Washington fan back in the early days of CDs when on a whim I bought a collection of his recordings on Charly Records. I’ve been buying his albums ever since.
Washington’s voice is sweet and clear; you can tell he learned a lot working for Johnny Adams. His guitar playing is even more striking; it sounds like an intoxicating combination of just about every great blues guitar slinger who ever lived.
That Charly Records disc highlighted a young musician who plays blues with a lot of jazz chops picked up in his hometown, New Orleans. Gospel influences are there, too. And when he adds funk to the mix, you might swear he’s related to Johnny “Guitar” Watson.
I’m looking forward to hearing everything in Washington’s musical arsenal on Friday at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. I’m just hoping he’s not drowned out by Coheed and Cambria, who’ll be performing a couple of stages away. I probably shouldn’t worry too much; I’m sure Washington can blast the blues as well caress them.
(ACL Spotlight highlights some acts worth checking out at the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival, which starts Oct. 2.)

Metal Mind
1992/2009
One of Poland’s premier metal bands, Turbo had been going for over decade when they released “One way”. After this they would surprisingly call it quits before reforming almost a decade later although a number of compilations would be released during the time when this were out of action. This band had started in the early 1980’s playing a classic style of metal somewhat similar to early Iron Maiden, but they would soon switch gears and adapt a more thrash approach to their music. Indeed by this album they were full into a an American thrash sound similar to the likes of Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, post-crossover DRI and others. Turbo had their chops down and knew how to push forward. I can’t deny that”One Way” is good thrash metal. The pace is brisk and the vocals are fittingly rough. However even by 1992 standards this album is a little dated and even one dimensional. If I had heard it without knowing the release date I would have guessed 1988 or 1989. It’s quite possible that the band was running short on ideas by this point. It’s a shame that they didn’t exist for so long after this, but perhaps they needed time to recharge their batteries and they would return with the quite good “Awatar”. This re-issue includes a lyric booklet.
Four sides recorded for Joe Davis’ label in 1952 and reissued on the ultra-cheap Guest Star label. And the transfers sound surprising good. Now, technically, I only know for sure that two of these (Mississippi Boogie and African Echoes) are Davis sides, but I’m almost completely nearly certain that the other two F&T tracks on this Guest Star LP are from the same session and label, even if they originally didn’t see the light of disc.
I’ve never been more nearly certain in my life, to the best of my memory.
With only four Ferrante and Teicher tracks, and an entire cash-in-on-the-duo’s-’60s-chart-success album to fill, Guest Star added six sides by Phillips and Burns with the Metropolitan Strings (and a vocal chorus)–sides that would be perfectly fine if both pianos were in tune with one another. They were not.
I’ve seen at least three versions of this LP, cover-art-wise, but this is the one (above) that resides in duplicate in my collection. Makes a perfect white-against-white-background image, no? (Oh, wait–I switched to a flesh-colored text background. Never mind.)
Just typing out loud. Sorry. To the prepared pianos of the late, great Art and Lou:
BOOGIE EXPRESS
AFRICAN ECHOES
MISSISSIPPI BOOGIE
HIGH, HIGH, HIGH (JAI, JAI, JAI)
Lee
(Wow–High, High, High. Chortle. Drugs. Sixties. Ha, ha. Youth culture. Wink, wink. Unintentional reference to. Guffaw.)
